It's not uncommon for sewer mains to either collapse after a long period of time, or roots from nearby trees can penetrate the drain and cause blockages. Roots can be cleared with a drain machine, but this is only a temporary solution, so we recommend replacing the affected area if you have this problem.

Sewer main blockages are nasty business! If a sewer overflows in your home it can cause major damage, as sewage water is treated differently than clean water. (Pipe burst insurance claims are often not as costly as sewer main floods). That's why it's important to be proactive and keep an eye on what's going on down there. It's not uncommon to find all sorts of surprises while inspecting our customer's drains!

Another issue that we often find is either a back graded pipe (pipe is not sloped the correct way) or a pipe with a belly in it (pipe has a U-shaped curve in it that creates a water pocket which slows drainage and creates an area for solids to gather. This typically ends with a sewer blockage over time. In any case, the best way to be proactive is to have a good idea of the health of your system and treat problems while they are in their infancy.
